CSD Student Advocacy 101: Your Voice, Your Profession, Your Future

Key Issues Affecting You

Funding education icon
Funding Your Education

High student debt and scarce scholarships create significant barriers for those entering CSD professions. As tuition outpaces inflation, limited federal loan forgiveness and specialized grants restrict workforce growth. Without sustainable financial support, many prospective clinicians face immense long-term debt that threatens the field’s future.

IDEA

Federal funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act remains a major point of tension due to chronic underfunding and recent grant cancellations. Although the federal government pledged to cover 40% of excess special education costs, it currently contributes only about 12–15%, leaving states and districts to absorb a significant multi-billion dollar funding gap.

Research Funding

Ongoing federal budget uncertainty has led to constrained and unpredictable funding forCSD research through agencies like the National Institutes of Health, increasing competition and slowing research progress. Proposed cuts and flat funding trends continue to threaten innovation in hearing, speech, and vestibular sciences.
