Stephanie Fleckenstein, Au.D., CCC-A
University of Iowa

“Throughout her service as clinical faculty, Stephanie has shaped every University of Iowa audiology student's learning. As a student, I valued her nurturing nature, ability to support critical thinking, integrity in providing evidence-based care, and her passion for service in the community. In fact, Stephanie helped ensure that all audiology students were well-equipped to be lifelong advocates through the University of Iowa Sound Awareness for Everyone (Ul-SAFE) program. Through Ul-SAFE, Stephanie has led countless education seminars and mentored students on advocacy techniques, community outreach, and more. I use the skills I learned from Stephanie for advocacy regularly as a provider, and her mentorship was truly transformative for me as a leader.” – Kevin Kock, AuD, CCC-A

“Stephanie is constantly adapting and updating her courses based on the most current research and developments within the field. She focuses on topics not highlighted in other courses, such as interdisciplinary work and providing culturally responsive and inclusive care. She constantly invites leaders in the field and those from the populations we serve, such as the Deaf and LGBTQIA+ communities, to speak. She critically evaluates how Wendell Johnson and we, as providers, can provide more inclusive care; she is not stagnant in her work and is willing to make change in the field. Stephanie carries this passion for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) outside of the classroom, as a faculty member on Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) DEI Committee. As such, Stephanie serves as a mentor for the University of Iowa’s Anti-Racism in CSD group and leads department-wide initiatives affecting patients and students.” – Hailey Kingsbury, Audiology Doctoral Student

“… Dr. Fleckenstein’s dedication to students and our field are consistently integrated into what she does as a clinical faculty member. She is a role model of professional and public engagement... She is active at the community, state, and national level. Her enthusiasm and excitement involving students in these activities set her apart. Dr. Fleckenstein requests, hears, and implements student input. This is most evident in the Orientation to Audiology Clinic which she has morphed into a student-centered, experienced-based, supportive learning experience for our beginning students resulting in better student preparedness and success in later clinical experiences. […] Finally, her dedication to inclusive, supportive, and transparent teaching goes beyond our program through presentations at the state and national level related to student success and quality clinical education.” – Danielle Kelsay, M.A., CCC-A
